The monitoring of television and radio broadcasts is built on an algorithmic solution for audio fingerprinting and automatic recognition. As a result, monitoring results become available in near real time. The approach requires only minimal human intervention, and recognition accuracy is measured in milliseconds. The system was built from the outset in three languages, and every descriptor based on classifiers is available automatically in all three. The classifiers are based on the Nice Classification (NCL) — the International Classification of Goods and Services — adapted for the mass-media sector.

Project overview

Coverage & Constraints

The type and number of television and radio channels subject to monitoring are not a technical constraint — any requested channel can be included. The pricing proposal is based on the channels available in the public multiplex and the radio stations in the FM band. The one limitation concerns the provision of advertising samples: apart from the client's own ad spots, no other spots can be supplied, because no physical recording of the broadcast is made or stored.

How the Monitoring Works

Advertising monitoring captures both technical and content descriptors, then delivers the results online in a comparable, ready-to-analyze form.

STEP ONEicon

Technical Descriptors

Each spot is logged with technical descriptors: date, time, duration, broadcast source, and position within the advertising block. Some descriptors are derived automatically — for example, weekends and weekdays, the week number, and the season of the year are derived from the date, while time slots and similar fields are derived from the time.

STEP TWOicon

Content Descriptors

Content descriptors capture the advertiser and manufacturer of the product or service, a 3-level brand typology, the advertised product or service, a description of the ad spot, a four-level typology of the advertised product or service, and a description of the advertising campaign by communication objective, type, object, kind, and origin. Where present, the slogan (tagline) used in the spot is also recorded.

STEP THREEicon

Unified Radio & TV Typology

The same typology is applied to both radio and television channels, which makes the datasets directly comparable — a significant advantage when analyzing campaigns across media.

STEP FOURicon

Online Data Delivery & Excel Export

Data is provided online. Clients receive a username and password for a platform where the monitoring results are available, with some results presented as ready-made charts. The complete dataset is available both for viewing and for download, and downloaded results can be processed further in Microsoft Excel®.

Key Results

Near Real-Time
Results

Algorithmic audio recognition makes monitoring results available in near real time, with only minimal human intervention required.

Millisecond
Accuracy

Automatic recognition is accurate down to the millisecond, ensuring precise capture of each advertising spot.

Three-Language
Support

The system was built from the outset in three languages, with every classifier-based descriptor available automatically in all three.

Comparable Radio
& TV Data

A single unified typology spans both radio and television channels, making the datasets directly comparable and ready for export to Excel.
